Archbishop of Canterbury to meet with U.S. church to discuss gay priests, marriage
TORONTO (CP) - The spiritual head of Anglicans worldwide says the debate surrounding same-sex marriage and gay priests threatens to divide the church.
Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams announced Monday that he'll meet with the American church to discuss the divisive issue. On a visit to Canada, Williams says it's his role to keep church members at "the table" address those concerns while maintaining unity.
The U.S. church faces a Sept. 30 deadline to ban the blessing of same-sex unions and the ordination of gay bishops or face possible expulsion from the international communion.

The archbishop of Canterbury broke weeks of silence in Toronto this morning, announcing that he will meet in September with the U.S. Episcopal Church on the eve of the American branch of Anglicanism being expelled from the international communion over gay rights.
"It has taken a couple of weeks to put together all the details of this," Rowan Williams told a jammed press conference this morning.

Anglicans trapped by questions of sex: Archbishop

TORONTO — The spiritual head of the world's 77 million Anglicans said
today his church is trapped by questions of sex and may well face
irreconcilable differences over acceptance of homosexuality that could
lead to its break up.
Dr. Rowan Williams, the Archbishop of Canterbury, also told a press
conference in Toronto that if Canadian Anglicans vote in two months
time to authorize church blessing of same-sex unions, “I don't think it
takes rocket science to work out that this will cause problems.”
He urged Canadian Anglicans to ask themselves when they come to decide
on the issue what is good for the health of the church locally and
globally.

I'm glad to hear he's coming. It gives me hope. And these days we could all use a bit of hope.

He says he's coming "in autumn," according to the press release. We could only hope he means to or before the House of Bishops September meeting. Too late may well be too late.
