Not so fast in Belfast

Ulster Anglican parishes deny Catholicism link
By Alf McCreary

Anglican religious group 'the traditional rite' today played down reports that members have asked the Vatican for a "full, corporate, sacramental union" with the Catholic Church.

The request, if successful, could result in some parish communities in Ireland - including a number in the north - being received formally into the Catholic Church, according to The Irish Catholic newspaper.

It stated that the parishes in counties Down, Tyrone and Laois could be affected.

They are part of the 'traditional rite' within the Church of Ireland who objected to the introduction of the ordination of women by the Irish House of Bishops.

Two Church of Ireland parishes in the North have reportedly asked to be received into the Catholic Church.

According to the Irish Catholic newspaper, one parish from the Republic is also seeking admission.

The parishes in question are in Down, Tyrone and Laois and are currently members of the 'traditional rite' of the Church of Ireland.

The Irish Catholic newspaper says the parishes have asked the Vatican for "full, corporate, sacramental union" under the authority of the Pope.

Conversion came after a lot of soul-searching

When an Anglican bishop's wife becomes a Catholic, its repercussions will be felt in both Churches.

The announcement that the wife of an Anglican bishop has become a Catholic was made by the Church of Ireland itself - presumably to counter possible leaks to the media.

It had the backing of two local bishops who indicated their support for the individual involved.

Anita Henderson, the wife of the Bishop of Tuam, the Rt Rev Dr Richard Henderson, had indicated that, after great soul-searching, she had decided to become a Catholic.
